About Kiamutuira washing station and Kiamu
Nestled in the lush landscapes of Kenya, Kiamutuira is a testament to community farming and the rich heritage of the Kikuyu people. Established in 1996, the washing station is part of the Mutira Cooperative Society, a collective at the heart of Kenyan coffee production since 1951.
The land borders the magnificent Mt. Kenya Forest. This closeness to one of Kenya’s most iconic natural landmarks gives the farm rich biodiversity and a stunning landscape — rolling hills and green valleys, an ideal environment for both coffee and tea.
The farm uses shade trees, mainly macadamia, to protect the coffee plants from excessive sunlight and keep the soil healthy. This gives better coffee and a sustainable farm. The cooperative comprises 600 farmers, with an average of 0.1 hectares each.
